Pete is a self-educated naturalist and an avid hiker in Washington DC’s parks. Through his volunteer participation in the GCA/Casey Trees Foundation street tree inventory, in a successful effort to rehabilitate a District park and school grounds and his work at a local vineyard, Pete became aware of the growing threat presented by invasive exotic plants. He is an active participant in the National Park Service’s Volunteers in Parks exotic plant management program.
Growing up in Washington, DC, Pete began his career in the field of high-tech gold and silver prospecting in Nevada, and continued with oil and gas prospecting in China and Texas. Following graduate school, he lived in Tokyo while co-authoring a study on economic security, and returned to Washington to become vice president of the Steel Manufacturers Association, the largest recycling industry in North America, with responsibility for general administration and tracking issues of environmental compliance, plant operations and human resources.
Utilizing his skills in business administration and financial management, Pete became a consultant for small for-profit and non-profit businesses, including Rebuilding Together/Christmas in April, while serving as a Trustee and volunteer coordinator for the Cathedral Choral Society.
As senior Business Manager for the Academy of Educational Development, a leading Washington non-profit, Pete supervised government and foundation-funded projects for its US Education and Workforce Development division.
He holds degrees in Geology, Chinese and International Economics and is a member of the Botanical and Geological Societies of Washington, and the Maryland Native Plant Society. |
