What is a “woodland?”
A woodland is a natural area with native trees, shrubs, grasses and other plants that by plan is intended to stay that way.
Where are Washington, DC’s woodlands?
The largest woodlands in the District are part of the National Park System, managed by the National Park Service (NPS). These Federally-owned lands include Rock Creek Park and many stream tributary parks that feed into the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. The federal government also manages woodlands on other, smaller properties that are scattered all around the city, such as the Civil War fort parks.
The District city government owns woodlands, too, on grounds managed by the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, DC Public Schools, and the DC Department of Transportation.
Woodlands also exist on many privately-owned properties throughout the city. |

How large are the woodlands?
The Rock Creek Park system alone is made up of more than 3000 acres of wooded lands! |
