About Us |
|
DC Woodlands is a non-profit, citizen-focused organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of wooded areas in the District of Columbia. Our objectives include: · Providing a public information portal on natural threats to the District’s wooded areas. · Recruiting volunteers and steering them toward volunteer opportunities. · Advocating for a comprehensive, city-wide invasive non-native plant management program. · Gathering and disseminating information on effective and sustainable management practices.

Our vision —
DC Woodlands was organized by active invasive exotic plant control volunteers in response to the recognition that the invasion of exotic plants is growing exponentially and threatens the very existence of our city’s natural areas.
We have found our volunteer work to be enjoyable and rewarding, and believe that volunteer efforts can have a significant impact. We believe that many others will want to join the effort once they are educated about and introduced to volunteer opportunities.
We believe that cooperation between ongoing, government-funded control programs and volunteer efforts is essential to achieve a sustainable impact, and that good communication is key to achieving cooperation.
We also believe that there is room for more research and comparative analysis to determine which control methods are most effective and will achieve the greatest result for the least effort and cost. Government entities, private research institutions and volunteers can work together to this end. |
